Personal Statement

Joining CHKD is a natural extension of the community-focused, mission-driven care that first drew me into the field of pediatric anesthesia.

Bio

Dr. Trevor Hebenstreit grew up in Virginia Beach and earned his undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech. After college, he spent seven years with Operation Smile, working alongside comprehensive teams of healthcare professionals on cleft lip and palate missions in places like the Philippines, Myanmar, and Kenya. Watching those teams transform children’s lives, and experiencing firsthand what it takes to deliver safe, sustainable surgical care in resource-limited settings, inspired him to pursue medicine himself.

Dr. Hebenstreit attended medical school and completed his anesthesia residency at George Washington University. He then went on to complete a pediatric anesthesia fellowship at Children’s National. Pediatric anesthesia drew him in because it sits at the intersection of two things he cares about most: the technical precision the field demands and the trust required to care for children and families during some of their most vulnerable moments.

Dr. Hebenstreit has a particular clinical interest in perioperative care for patients in resource-limited settings and anesthesia for global surgery, drawing on his years of hands-on mission experience. After nine years in Washington, D.C., he’s excited to return home to Hampton Roads.

Outside the hospital, Dr. Hebenstreit spends his time at home with his wife, Kate; their daughter, Brontë; and three dogs: Artie, Ash, and Frank. In his free time, he stays active, cooks elaborate meals, builds Lego sets, plays board games, and travels whenever he can. Most of all, he treasures time spent with friends and family.
