What to Expect on Surgery Day
About Us
CHKD performs surgery at the main hospital as well as at our surgery centers located in Newport News and Virginia Beach.
During surgery, we keep a close eye on children's breathing, heart rate, blood pressure and other vital signs. We also help with pain after surgery and are part of the general pain management team at CHKD. We ease children's anxiety about surgery through age-appropriate communication and extra touches, like allowing them to pick a favorite flavor of anesthesia. Strawberry and bubble gum are very popular.
In addition, our anesthesiologists are involved in many diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and perform preoperative screening and assessments.

Pre-Surgical Consultations Available
Our pediatric anesthesiology team participates in every surgery that takes place at CHKD in Norfolk and at our two health and surgery centers. We are available for pre-surgical consults in the day surgery area on the third floor of CHKD in Norfolk.
The type of anesthesia a child receives and how he receives it depends on the procedure he's having and his medical condition.
Insurance and Billing Information
We accept all major insurances, including Virginia Medicaid, Tricare, and Cardinal Health. Please take the time to understand how your insurance plan works, especially regarding annual deductibles and co-pays, which can affect your out-of-pocket costs.
Unless you have HMO insurance that requires a referral from a primary care physician, a referral is not required. You can simply call our office to make an appointment.
If your insurance does require a referral, make sure it has not expired and remember to bring it with you to the appointment.
Everyone should bring a government-issued photo ID and their insurance card to every medical appointment.
