CHKD Lab Services
As an accredited facility, CHKD has met the highest standard of care for all patients, guiding our mission to provide Health, Healing, and Hope to All Children.
Each member of our extensively trained technical staff meets the specific certification requirements of the American Society for Clinical Pathology. We ensure high quality of testing by participating in quality assurance and proficiency testing programs, internal competency assessments, regular education programs, conferences and workshops. Each technologist completes age-specific communication training to ensure the best communication skills to put your child at ease.
Accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), CHKD's laboratory performs many routine and specialized tests for children and teens using state-of-the-art technology. Our goal is to provide quality testing, timeliness in reporting, and personalized services.

We provide rapid turnaround of test results, outpatient lab service, courier service, and electronic delivery of reports.
No Appointment Needed
No appointment is needed for most laboratory testing at CHKD.
If testing requires a departmental appointment, please call laboratory services between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Sweat Chloride Tests
Sweat chloride testing requires an appointment. Please call our chemistry department at (757) 668-9567.
Platelet Aggregations
Platelet aggregations also require an appointment. Please call the hemostasis department at (757) 668-9706 so that we may provide special instructions specific to your child's test.

Insurance and Billing Information
We accept major insurances, including Virginia Medicaid, Tricare, and Cardinal Health. Please take the time to understand how your insurance plan works, especially regarding annual deductibles and co-pays, which can affect your out-of-pocket costs.
Unless you have HMO insurance that requires a referral from a primary care physician, a referral is not required. You can simply call our office to make an appointment.
If your insurance does require a referral, make sure it has not expired and remember to bring it with you to the appointment.
Everyone should bring a government-issued photo ID and their insurance card to every medical appointment.
