About Us
The journey through the preteen, teen, and young adult years is filled with both physical and emotional changes and challenges. The Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine practice at CHKD is a specialty center for teens and young adults ages 12-21.
Our provider is trained to help adolescents work through the unique challenges they may face in preparation for becoming an adult and work closely with parents and primary care physicians to help navigate these formative years.

Patient Information
A patient can come to their appointment alone or with parents. When possible, we respect the wishes to keep one's care private. But we also believe it's important to include trusted guardians or adults when making important decisions. We can help patients find ways to talk to adults about difficult choices. Under Virginia law, as a teenager a patient can consent to receive care without an adult for issues related to:
- Mental health
- Substance abuse
- Birth control
- Pregnancy
- Testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (including HIV)
For all other care, parents or guardians must give consent. For those who want to know more about confidentiality and/or costs, ask our staff.
Insurance and Billing Information
We accept all major insurances, including Virginia Medicaid, Tricare, and Cardinal Health. Please take the time to understand how your insurance plan works, especially regarding annual deductibles and co-pays, which can affect your out-of-pocket costs.
Unless you have HMO insurance that requires a referral from a primary care physician, a referral is not required. You can simply call our office to make an appointment.
If your insurance does require a referral, make sure it has not expired and remember to bring it with you to the appointment.
Everyone should bring a government-issued photo ID and their insurance card to every medical appointment.
We offer in-depth information about insurance in our billing and insurance section.
Missed Appointments
To help us provide timely care to all patients, we ask for your cooperation in keeping scheduled appointments.
Missed appointments and late cancellations prevent other children from receiving our care. Please keep your appointments and follow these guidelines:
- Confirm your appointment at least three business days in advance by phone, email, or text. Unconfirmed appointments may be offered to another patient.
- Cancel or reschedule at least one full business day before your appointment. Cancellations that do not meet this time requirement will be considered a missed appointment.
- Please arrive 20 minutes early for check-in.
Prescription Refills
We require 48 hour notice for all prescriptions. Prescription requests will need to be made during our regular business hours, Monday - Thursday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., through the MyCHKD Patient Portal, or at your local pharmacy.
