When Your Child Injures a Knee

We know you have questions:

  • Do we need an MRI?
  • Will we need surgery?
  • Who is the most appropriate health care professional to see?
  • What is the rehab process?
  • Will my kid ever play again or have a normal knee again?
  • What resources are available to help us get through this?
  • How quickly do we need to have surgery and start the rehabilitation process?
  • Who can I trust to take care of my child?

CHKD has developed a program specific to ACL reconstruction and rehabilitation. At CHKD, we know ACL reconstruction as well as all recoveries from knee injuries are journeys.

We are dedicated to supporting you through the entire process, from surgery to recovery. Let us be your trusted guide.

Why CHKD?

When the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is torn in an adolescent or young adult, it typically requires reconstruction by a pediatric sports medicine orthopedic surgeon.

First, a determination can be made with a physical exam by a sports medicine physician or an athletic trainer for a suspected ACL tear that is commonly confirmed with a MRI.

Once confirmation is made that the ACL is torn, a consultation with a surgeon is scheduled. Also at this time, specific “prehab” exercises are prescribed to be performed at home and/or with a qualified sports medicine physical therapist. This is done to begin working toward reducing swelling and restoring lost motion of the injured knee.

At your consultation, the surgeon will discuss surgical ACL reconstruction options and outline the plan for surgery and rehabilitation. Sports medicine physical therapists will assist the athlete as they prepare to get “in shape” for surgery. Typically, surgical outcomes are better when the swelling in the knee is reduced and knee motion is restored.
