CHKD has officially begun a multi-phase demolition of CHKD Medical Tower at 400 Gresham Drive in Norfolk. Once complete, the site will serve as a temporary green space while CHKD evaluates future health system plans. The project, led by East Coast Demolition, is expected to take approximately one year.
Project Timeline
Phase 1: Interior Gutting
November 2025 – May 2026
This stage began in early November and uses a reverse-construction approach to safely remove and haul away all interior materials including windows and siding. By May, the structure will be down to its metal frame and prepared for exterior demolition.
- On weekdays, construction trucks will operate from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Medical Tower demolition zone is fenced off for your safety. All visitors and healthcare staff on the Norfolk campus should avoid the fenced area when walking near the construction site or taking outdoor breaks.
- The parking lot of The King’s Daughters Milk Bank will be prioritized for Milk Bank operations and the East Coast Demolition crew.
Phase 2: Exterior Demolition
June – September 2026
Following the interior work, crews will begin dismantling the building from the top down, using large-scale equipment.
- Access to the Milk Bank and Children’s Pavilion is not expected to be affected.
- CHKD does not expect any parking or road closures. Should any become necessary, we will provide advance notice to keep disruption to a minimum.
- Exterior demolition, which also includes foundation work, will be complete by late August. East Coast Demolition will then backfill and grade the land.
- The remainder of any large equipment will move out in late September.
