We will not be accepting applications for the Spring 2021 internship session. We will continue to assess the current COVID-19 health crisis and post up-to-date information as it becomes available.

CHKD's Child Life Services provides a quality training experience for future child life professionals by offering a 600-hour, 16-week internship program with varied days and hours for the Spring and Fall semesters.

Application Requirements

In order to apply for this internship, you must meet the Association for Child Life Professionals certification eligibility course requirement, be affiliated with a college or university that has a standing agreement with CHKD, and you must have at least 100 hours of volunteer or paid experience working with children and/or have completed a child life practicum. Submit Your Application

Mail your complete application in one envelope. Include:

  • Completed and signed ACLP internship application and required documents listed on the application checklist: ACLP Common Child Life Application Form
  • Three reference letters in sealed envelopes with each letter accompanied by the common recommendation form included in the Common Child Life Internship Application: One of the letters must be from a person who has observed your work with children, especially supervisor(s) from any hospital/health care settings.
  • Official transcript from each school attended as well as currently attending. Include documentation of all courses in progress.
  • Eligibility assessment by the ACLP. See eligibility assessment page for more details.

An interview is required if your application meets the admission criteria. Upon review of your application, you will be notified if you are selected for an interview. An in-person, on-site interview is preferred if you live within 100 miles of Norfolk. However, a phone interview can be scheduled if you live outside the 100-mile radius or are unable to attend an on on-site interview. If you are selected as an intern, an affiliation agreement must be negotiated between your college or university and CHKD prior to the start of your internship. If an affiliation fails to be negotiated, the internship offer becomes void.
