Fostering Excellence Among Healthcare Professionals

The CME program fosters excellence in pediatric care through its diverse educational activities. Activities focus on prevention, treatment, diagnosis, emerging technologies and procedures in pediatrics, pharmacotherapy, and practice-related needs, and are designed to improve the pediatric knowledge, attitudes, and skills of physicians and healthcare professionals who care for children.

Specific CME activities include, but are not limited to, single and multi-day conferences, community rounds and maternal newborn transport reviews. Most activities are presented in traditional lecture and case-based formats. However, the program encourages diverse presentation formats to achieve activity objectives.

Register Here

Presenter: Jeffrey Wilson, MD, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

This CHKD Provider Relation CME Lunch & Learn discussion explores applying SBIRT in pediatric primary care by using validated screening tools, motivational interviewing techniques, and team-based workflows to identify and address adolescent substance use early.

Objectives:

  • Define SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) and describe its three core components and foundation in motivational interviewing.
  • Administer and interpret validated adolescent substance use screening tools, including the S2BI (Screening to Brief Intervention) and CRAFFT instruments, to stratify risk levels.
  • Apply the four steps of the Brief Negotiated Interview (BNI)—building rapport, providing feedback, assessing readiness to change, and negotiating a change plan—using motivational interviewing techniques (OARS: Open-ended questions, Affirmations, Reflective listening, Summarizing).
  • Differentiate SBIRT from conventional substance use disorder treatment approaches by recognizing its capacity to identify at-risk and harmful use patterns before diagnostic thresholds are met.
  • Identify best practices for implementing SBIRT within an interprofessional team, including role delineation among nurses, therapists, care managers, and prescribers.
