Supporting CHKD Research

(757) 668-7070

Your support allows CHKD to participate in medical research as part of our ongoing commitment to provide the most advanced treatments to children with childhood diseases. Your support allows our doctors to collaborate with worldwide experts in a variety of pediatric medical specialties and bring the most advanced treatments to children at CHKD. The following are just a few of the research programs at CHKD.

Cancer Research

CHKD's department of hematology/oncology is a member of the Children's Oncology Group (COG) and has approximately 70 COG studies open for enrollment.

The Children's Oncology Group develops and coordinates cancer research studies for over 220 member institutions, including cancer centers of all major universities and teaching hospitals throughout North America. Member facilities must undergo a thorough performance evaluation every three years and demonstrate competence, compliance and commitment to curing and preventing childhood and adolescent cancer through scientific discovery and compassionate care.

The National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health oversees the research studies done in cooperation with the Children's Oncology Group. Visit Children's Oncology Group for more information.

Sickle Cell and Bleeding Disorders Research

The hematology/oncology research office provides support for studies that involve sickle cell and bleeding disorders patients. Many of these studies are national, multi-cultural studies sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Cystic Fibrosis Clinical Research Program

By evaluating and participating in the development of new therapies and drugs for our patients, the Cystic Fibrosis Center at CHKD is recognized as a CF clinical research site.

A dedicated CF research nurse leads our team as we build our research program and provide new therapeutic options for our patients.

Pediatric Neurology Research

The child and adolescent neurology department is actively engaged in a wide variety of clinical research in close collaboration with the Department of Pediatrics Clinical Research Unit. Clinical research helps to gain information about new innovations in treatments for migraines, epilepsy, Tourette syndrome, autism and other neurological conditions.
