Personal Statement
The opportunity to build a world-class congenital heart program is what inspired me to come to CHKD. I have tremendous support here from a very motivated multidisciplinary team and administrators. Furthermore, I really enjoy this region of the country and the hospitality of the people. As the only full-service children's hospital in the state of Virginia, I see CHKD as being a destination hospital for the state and beyond.
Bio
Umar Boston, MD, is the Chief of Cardiology at CHKD. He has been practicing as a pediatric cardiac surgeon for more than 19 years treating neonates and infants with a wide variety of congenital heart defects.
Dr. Boston was raised in Brisbane, Australia, and later moved to Toronto in Ontario, Canada to pursue his goal to become a doctor. His pursuit of medicine comes from personal experiences as a child watching his father suffer from cardiovascular disease. His passion for congenital heart surgery stems from his time at the Mayo Clinic where some of his mentors were pioneers in this field.
Dr. Boston considers the ability to operate on children a privilege, which he never takes for granted. He finds it remarkably fulfilling to see how well children fare after complex heart operations and the positive impact it has on their families and friends.
His specific areas of interest include Ebstein's anomaly, heart transplantation in infants, and family centered care for children recovering from heart surgery.
Dr. Boston chose to join CHKD for the opportunity to build a world-class congenital heart program. He looks forward to seeing the program’s progress over the next five years.
In his spare time, Dr. Boston enjoys taking Pilates classes with his wife, Melissa, who does her best to help keep him fit. The couple also enjoys traveling together. Dr. Boston is especially proud to be the father of his three adult children, Kalon, Kali, and Mina.
