Operation Playtime

At quick glance, these two new friends appear to be enjoying a typical afternoon play date. A closer look, however, reveals their matching hospital socks and IV poles — perhaps the only obvious giveaways that Rowyn Rodelander and Kylie Braford are both enjoying time is CHKD's playroom while recovering from surgery.

Using a "just for kids” approach, our general care unit’s multi-disciplinary team works to provide the best family-centered care to patients who require medical and surgical management for a wide range of pediatric conditions.

General Care team members are regarded as CHKD experts in the following areas:

Patients with Diabetes

Working with pediatric endocrinologists, certified diabetes educators,  and social workers, the General Care Unit teaches young people newly diagnosed with diabetes how to manage their disease.

Patients with Pectus Excavatum

The General Care team is proud offer patients undergoing the Nuss procedure for chest wall reconstruction a structured and comprehensive recovery plan developed and implemented by the unit's multidisciplinary team in caring for more than 1,000 patients after surgery, more than any other hospital in America.

Patients with Burns

The General Care Unit staff, in collaboration with physical therapists, occupational therapists, Child Life, wound care specialists, and a pain coordinator, use age-appropriate diversion, pharmacological, and comprehensive management to care for patients with burn injuries.

Orthopedic Patients

Many common and complex orthopedic conditions are repaired and managed at CHKD. Most orthopedic patients receive post-operative care on this medical/surgery unit. Throughout their stay, patients receive physical and occupational therapies, wound and pain management, as well as comprehensive family education at discharge.
