Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Program
Patients with brain tumors require comprehensive, multidisciplinary care to address the complex challenges and treatments that come with their diagnosis. The neuro-oncology program at CHKD offers a coordinated team approach, bringing together oncologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, endocrinologists, nurse navigators, dietitians, social workers, and education consultants — all in a single location. This team works collaboratively to manage symptoms, provide specialized care, and support patients in every aspect of their journey.
We offer a wholistic approach that is essential in delivering expert care, emotional support, and addressing both the immediate and long-term effects of living with a brain tumor. This integrated care model ensures that each patient receives personalized treatment, promoting better outcomes and enhancing overall well-being, both during and after treatment.
Why Choose Us
Each year around 4,000 children and teens in the U.S. are diagnosed with brain tumors- the most common pediatric solid tumor. These tumors are unique in their characteristics and require specialized treatment approaches.
Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD) is a free-standing children's hospital that plays a vital role in addressing these needs. As a freestanding pediatric facility, CHKD offers comprehensive services—including medical, surgical, and mental health care—tailored specifically for children, adolescents, and young adults. Our central location ensures families have access to expert care without the need for long-distance travel. The hospital provides a close-knit, welcoming environment where we offer personalized care and families feel supported throughout their child's treatment journey.
Serving the greater Hampton Roads area, the Eastern Shore of Virginia, northeastern North Carolina, and beyond, CHKD is a central part of a broader pediatric health system committed to delivering specialized, compassionate care for young patients facing serious health challenges like brain tumors.

Treatment Options
Chemotherapy medications slow down cancer cell growth. If indicated, our Neuro-oncologists use chemotherapy, often in conjunction with other treatment options, as part of the treatment plan based on your child’s diagnosis and individualized needs.
Radiation is a treatment option for brain and spinal tumors. CHKD partners with regional medical centers to provide advanced radiation treatment options for children, including proton therapy if appropriate for your child’s condition.
If surgery is an option for treatment, our expert neurosurgeons will use advanced, minimally invasive techniques to treat your child.
There are new treatments and medications that are designed to target specific mutations in brain tumors and help your child’s own immune system recognize and destroy cancer cells. Here at CHKD, our Neuro-Oncology team works closely with insurance providers to help secure approval for these drugs when they are appropriate for your child.
