Hematology and Oncology at CHKD provides inpatient and outpatient care for children, adolescents, and young adults diagnosed with cancer, sickle cell disease, and blood disorders.
We are committed to being regional and national leaders in the treatment of children with cancer, sickle cell disease, coagulation disorders and general blood disorders.
Unique Needs, Personal Care
At CHKD, we believe that children with cancer and blood disorders deserve personal care that addresses their unique emotional, spiritual, and educational needs, as well as their medical ones. A dedicated and highly trained team will help you and your family coordinate the care your child needs and provide a safe and supportive environment before, after and during treatment.
Comprehensive Care
We treat many different types of cancers and blood disorders at CHKD and each patient has a board-certified pediatric hematology/oncology physician who oversees the multidisciplinary team necessary to provide the best possible outcome for every child.
Inpatient Care
Children who require inpatient cancer care are admitted to our hematology/oncology unit on the 5th floor of the hospital. The unit, which features 16 private rooms and a colorful playroom, was designed to help make families feel as comfortable as possible. Each patient room has its own bathroom and space for a parent to spend the night. Learn more about our hematology/oncology unit here.
Outpatient Care
Cancer and Blood Disorders Center
The Cancer and Blood Disorders Center (CCBDC), located on the second floor of the hospital, offers outpatient medical treatment in a comfortable setting. Patients are able to receive complete care in a single location specifically designed for all patients. Our outpatient unit includes a comprehensive clinic where patients can see multiple physicians in the same place; a chemotherapy infusion area; a transfusion area; sedation rooms for procedures; an on-site pharmacy; child life area; video games; movies and more. Learn more about our Cancer and Blood Disorders Center here.
Cancer and Blood Disorders Research
According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the survival rate for children with cancer continues to improve. This improvement is due to significant advances in treatment, resulting in a cure or long-term remission. The advances in treatment for pediatric cancers is due in part to research that is done at places like CHKD. Learn more here.
