FAQ: Two-Factor Authentication

What is two-factor authentication?

Technology has grown at a significant pace over the last decade and as that growth accelerates, security requirements must adapt. Passwords are no longer the mainstay of security when accessing devices, software, websites, and any other form of personal data that requires protection from unauthorized users. Multi-factor authentication, or in this case “two-factor” authentication (2FA), decreases the chances that others will have access to your personal data. The concept for 2FA requires two items, “something you know”, such as a password, and “something you have”, such as your smartphone. Without each of these factors, your attempt to authenticate and login will fail. Users attempting to access your data that only have your password and username will not have the ability to login.

Why are we using a two-factor login process?

Healthcare organizations and institutions are fast becoming the target of criminals within the cyber world. The two-factor process provides an additional assurance that unauthorized users will not have access to your data or the health system. An important reminder, the Two-Factor process only impacts you when you are logging in from an outside network, such as your home..
