As a physician dedicated to the care of patients with chest wall deformities, I was honored to participate in the 21st Nuss Conference and Advanced Pectus Course, hosted by the Nuss Center and Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD). Held on the campus of Eastern Virginia Medical School, this three-day event brought together more than 50 attendees — including international guests — for an immersive experience in the latest advancements in pectus care.

The conference opened with a warm welcome from Dr. L.D. Britt, a renowned surgical leader and educator. Over the course of the event, participants engaged in 27 lectures covering a wide spectrum of topics, from surgical techniques to multidisciplinary approaches in patient care. The faculty included 14 expert surgeons and 11 members of the broader care team - nurse practitioners, physical therapists, coordinators, and educators - whose insights underscored the importance of collaborative care. Opening day ended with a lively reception at The Grain in the Hilton Main Hotel, overlooking the scenic Norfolk waterfront near the historic USS Wisconsin Battleship at Nauticus Naval Museum.

Beyond the lecture halls, the conference featured hands-on simulation labs and breakout sessions led by CHKD and Nuss Center staff, offering practical learning opportunities that enriched our clinical understanding. Vendors from across the country showcased both surgical hardware and non-surgical treatment options, reflecting the evolving landscape of chest wall reconstruction.

One of the most memorable moments came during the evening reception at the Chrysler Museum, where CHKD President and CEO Amy Sampson welcomed attendees. That night, Senator Williams-Graves presented Dr. Donald Nuss with a Resolution from the Commonwealth of Virginia, officially designating December as Chest Wall Deformity Awareness Month — a powerful recognition of the impact this work has on children and families. Mrs. Tessa Nuss was also honored for her unwavering support and advocacy.

The final day focused on clinical outcomes, complex case discussions, and key takeaways that reinforced our shared commitment to excellence. The spirit of collaboration and innovation was palpable throughout the event, reminding us why we do what we do.

The success of this conference is a testament to the dedication of the Nuss Center and CHKD teams. Their leadership continues to shape the future of chest wall care, ensuring that patients receive the safest, most effective treatments available.
