Expert Care for Children of All Ages

CHKD's urology program is part of a regional collaborative between CHKD and the University of Virginia. CHKD and UVA combine the efforts of pediatric urologists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensive care physicians, and support professionals from both institutions with the goal of improving outcomes for children with complex urological issues. Offering the highest quality of care in a child-friendly environment, together we are dedicated to the evaluation and treatment of pediatric urological and genital disorders in infants, children, and teens.

Our physicians are board certified in urology and have all completed specialized training in pediatric urology. We offer the latest minimally invasive surgical procedures including:

  • Robotic surgery
  • Percutaneous stone removal
  • Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy
  • Laparoscopic intra-abdominal surgery
  • Deflux injections

Certain minor surgical procedures can be performed in the office under local anesthesia, including meatotomy, simple penile skin bridges, and circumcision.

CHKD pediatric urologists participate in several multi-disciplinary teams for state-of-the-art care of patients with differences of sexual development, prenatal genitourinary abnormalities, spina bifida and spinal cord injury, chronic kidney disease and kidney transplant. Prenatal consultations and a birth plan including urologic workup are also provided for expectant parents when genitourinary abnormalities are diagnosed in their unborn child.

CHKD has dedicated voiding dysfunction specialists, with a team comprised of physical therapists, nurse practitioners, and doctors offering video-urodynamics and biofeedback equipment specifically for designed for children. In addition, we offer therapies for refractory bladder dysfunction, including peripheral neuromodulation and bladder Botox.

Robotic-Assisted Surgery at CHKD

Robotic-assisted surgery at CHKD offers minimally invasive surgery that uses smaller incisions, meaning less pain and scarring, and a quicker recovery and shorter hospital stay compared to standard surgery, where a large incision is made. For children with complex urologic conditions, minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery may be recommended. We will partner with your family to choose the best surgical approach for your child depending on their health and condition.  Learn more here.

Conditions We Treat

Please note: Acute fever or urinary tract infection work-up should be completed through your primary care provider. Acute testicular pain should be evaluated in the emergency department.

Insurance and Referral Information

If you have an HMO, you must:

  • Get a referral from your child's primary care physician before you call to make an appointment.
  • Make sure your referral has not expired. Many are good for only 30 days, so check yours before you come to your appointment. If your referral has expired, call your primary care physician and explain your situation. In most cases, your primary care physician will provide a new or extended referral.
  • Bring the referral with you to the appointment.  If referred from outside the CHKD Health System, please bring your referral and other medical records with you to your appointment or fax them in advance to (757) 668-7883, Attention: CHKD Urology Nursing. If you do not have a referral, or if the referral you have is expired, your HMO will not pay for your appointment.

If you have fee-for-service insurance or a PPO, you do not need a physician's referral to make an appointment.

We offer in-depth information about insurance in our billing and insurance section.
